2. Final Design & Rationale

Caption: Wave Pattern Packaging_Sun Qihang_Task 3

Rationale This design re‑imagines the wave from Hokusai’s print as a modern pattern for packaging. I wanted the piece to feel calm yet lively, so I repeated the wave shape but changed its height and frequency across the page. The blue palette links to water and sustainability. The big rounded rectangle in the middle stands for the product box and gives the eye a place to rest. By keeping the text simple and centred, the message is clear without fighting with the background. Overall, the design shows how traditional art can inspire contemporary, eco‑friendly branding and illustrates basic principles like repetition, contrast, balance and unity in a straightforward way.

3. Final Reflection

What have I learnt in this module? In this module, I learned many important design principles. For example, I learned about Gestalt theory, contrast, and balance. By studying 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa', I know how to find these principles in real artworks. I also learned how to use these rules to make my own design better, not just designing by feeling.

What did I enjoy the most? I enjoyed Task 3 the most. It was very fun to change my rough sketch into a real digital design. I liked choosing different blue colours and making the wave pattern for the packaging. It felt great to see my idea become a finished and beautiful work.

What did I not enjoy the most? I did not enjoy the visual analysis part very much in the beginning. Writing about why a design works is quite hard for me. It needs a lot of thinking and reading. I prefer doing practical design work rather than writing long theoretical analysis. However, I know it is useful now.

What have I learnt about myself through this module? I learned that I always want to jump to the final design too quickly. This class taught me that the step-by-step process is very important. I need to spend more time on sketching and thinking about my choices, like why I choose a specific shape or layout.

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey? My design process has changed. Now, I will think about composition rules and visual balance before I start drawing. But my passion for creating beautiful visual art has not changed. I still love telling stories and expressing ideas through my designs.

What are my aspirations? In the future, I want to use these basic 2D design skills in my 3D CG art and character creation. A good understanding of layout and contrast will help me build better 3D environments and scenes. My dream is to study at the Royal College of Art in the UK for my master's degree. I want to become an excellent 3D CG artist and create amazing visual works that can touch people's hearts.
